Caring for your aspidistra leaves

Recut the stems at an angle. Change the water every four or five days.

Aspidistra is close to indestructible as a cut leaf and will outlast everything around it.

If a leaf dulls with dust, wipe it with a soft damp cloth and the shine returns.

Folded or looped leaves in an arrangement are held with a small pin or a hidden staple. If one comes loose you can reset it with a dressmaking pin pushed through both layers.

The aspidistra earned the nickname cast iron plant in Victorian parlours, where it survived gas lamps, coal smoke and near-total neglect.
