A milestone is worth more than a bouquet picked up on the way over. For a significant birthday or a big anniversary we design around the person rather than a template. That might be one generous arrangement placed where everyone gathers, or several smaller pieces carried through an apartment so the whole space feels like part of the evening.

Most of this work happens in New York homes, which is its own discipline. Ceiling heights vary, hallways are narrow, and a piece that looks modest in a studio can overwhelm a dining room. Tom Lewis has been designing flowers in this city for more than twenty-five years, much of it in apartments, brownstones and rooftops where flowers have to work hard in a tight footprint.
