Caring for your dahlias

Dahlias are a short-lived cut flower and no amount of care will change that. Five good days is a normal, healthy run. Knowing that in advance makes them easier to enjoy.

The stems are hollow and hold bacteria readily, so change the water every single day and recut a small amount off the ends when you do. Clean water is the whole game with dahlias.

Keep them cool and out of direct sun. Heat takes days off them.

Strip all the foliage. Dahlia leaves collapse well before the flowers do and make the water murky within hours.

They arrive at their peak rather than in bud, so what you see on day one is close to their best.

Dahlias are native to the mountains of Mexico, where the Aztecs grew them for food and for the hollow stems, which were used as water pipes.
