Garden Rose

Fuller and rounder than a standard rose, with many more petals and a scent that a commercial rose rarely has. They open wide and fast, which is the point of them.

Caring for your garden roses

Treat them as you would any rose: an angled recut of about an inch, no foliage below the waterline, fresh water every two days.

The difference is pace. Garden roses are bred to open fully and they will do it faster in a warm room. A cool spot slows them down; a windowsill above a radiator will have them blown open by the second evening.

Do not be alarmed when they open flat and show their centres. That fully blown, slightly overblown stage is the look these varieties exist for, and many people find it the most beautiful day of the vase.

They bruise more easily than a standard rose, so handle by the stem rather than the head.

A garden rose can carry more than a hundred petals, where a standard long-stem rose carries around forty.
