Thick creamy petals and one of the most intense scents in the flower world. Beautiful, short-lived, and famously easy to bruise.
Gardenias are the most delicate flower we sell and they will not last long. Two to four days is a normal life, and the scent through those days is the reason people ask for them anyway.
Do not touch the petals. Skin oil marks them and the mark turns brown within a few hours. Handle only by the stem or the leaves.
They absorb water through their petals as well as their stems, so mist them lightly once or twice a day.
A single gardenia bloom floated in a shallow bowl of cool water is the traditional way to present one, and it also keeps the petals off any surface that could bruise them.
Keep them cool and away from direct sun and drafts.
Gardenia petals bruise brown at the lightest touch, which is why florists handle them with the back of a knife rather than fingertips.
