Slim grey stems topped with purple spikes, and the most recognisable scent in the flower trade. Used fresh in summer arrangements and dried the rest of the year.
Fresh lavender is not a long-lasting cut flower. Recut the stems, use shallow water and change it every two days, and treat it as a short-lived pleasure rather than a lasting one.
Its real life begins after that. Bundle the stems with an elastic band, hang them upside down somewhere dry and out of direct sunlight, and leave them for two weeks. The scent concentrates as it dries and stays with it.
Dried lavender sheds small flowers when handled. Keep it somewhere it will not be brushed past constantly, or stand it in a jar where the shed flowers collect at the bottom.
Lavender keeps its scent well after drying, and rolling a dried stem between your fingers brings it straight back.
