Flower care guide
Broad, leathery leaves, deep green on top and warm bronze underneath. Used mostly as foliage, and often preserved, in which form it lasts for years.
Fresh magnolia. The stems are thick and woody. Cut at a sharp angle and split the bottom inch so water can get in. Change the water every four days. The leaves turn a deeper bronze as they age.
Preserved magnolia. Do not put it in water. Preserved stems have had their sap replaced with glycerine and water will spoil them. Keep them dry, out of direct sun, and dust occasionally with a soft brush. Handled that way they hold their colour and suppleness.
Magnolias evolved before bees existed, so their tough flowers are built to be pollinated by beetles crawling over them.
