Cut orchid stems bring a long-lasting, quietly expensive quality to an arrangement. A few stems do the work of a much larger bunch of anything else.
Recut the stems at an angle and use room-temperature water rather than cold. Orchids are tropical and cold water shocks them.
Change the water every three or four days. Orchids are less prone to fouling water than most flowers because they carry little foliage, but clean water still extends their life.
Keep them away from drafts, air conditioning and open windows in cold weather. A sudden temperature drop makes orchid buds fall off before they open.
They enjoy humidity. A light mist every couple of days suits them, particularly in a heated apartment in winter.
Buds toward the end of the stem open gradually over the first week, so the stem changes shape as it goes.
